VISITOR GUIDE · 2026-10-19
Clinic invoices and insurance questions for visitors to Korea
A receipt proves a payment was recorded; it does not automatically establish what an insurer will cover. Before a visit, ask your insurer which documents it requires and ask the clinic what it can issue. Keep those two answers separate so that a promised document is not mistaken for promised reimbursement.

Start with your insurer’s actual requirements

Ask about the specific service and your own policy, not whether “medical tourism is covered” in general. Find out whether approval is needed before treatment and which document formats, language or item descriptions matter. A clinic or directory cannot determine the outcome of an individual claim.
Request itemised descriptions where available
Ask whether the clinic can provide a bill that identifies the consultation, tests, procedure, materials and other charged items. Preserve the dates, currency and issuer information. Do not rewrite the service description yourself to make it appear to meet an insurance category.
Distinguish medical records from payment records
An insurer may ask for information beyond a receipt, while a later clinician may need information that is irrelevant to a payment claim. Make a checklist of each required document and who issues it. Ask about fees and the time needed to obtain records or translations.
Keep a traceable set of documents
Store the clinic-issued originals alongside any translation and payment evidence you choose to retain. If a correction is needed, ask the issuer to make it rather than editing the document. Use the catalogue to find relevant care, then settle the insurance question with the organisation responsible for your policy.

Ask the insurer about the service before asking the clinic for a document
An insurer may need to know why the service is being provided, whether prior authorisation is required and which documents support a claim. Confirm these requirements with the insurer rather than assuming a clinic can promise reimbursement. Elective, preventive and medically indicated services can be treated differently under a policy. A receipt showing payment does not establish that the service is covered.
If the insurer requests a particular form or language, obtain its requirements before the appointment where possible. Ask whether original documents, itemised charges or a clinical report are needed. Give the clinic a precise document request rather than asking for an “insurance certificate” without a format. The clinic may charge separately for issuing or translating certain records.
Keep the financial and medical records connected but distinct
An itemised invoice explains what was charged; a payment receipt records the transaction; a medical report explains the care. Ask which document the clinic can provide and when it will be ready. Check the spelling of your name against the identity used for your insurer before leaving. If a record needs correction, use the clinic’s process rather than editing an issued document yourself.
Catalogue menu prices are useful for understanding published fees but cannot predict an insurer’s settlement. Keep records of any revised plan and additional payment alongside the final invoice. If you have not obtained a coverage decision, budget on the basis that reimbursement remains uncertain. A message from a clinic or intermediary should not be treated as the insurer’s authorisation.
