Orthodontic consultations in Korea: records, total costs and long-term visits
An orthodontic consultation is the start of an ongoing care relationship rather than a single appliance purchase. NHS information describes assessment of teeth and jaws, potentially supported by images or scans, with continuing adjustment appointments and retainers after braces. If you live outside Korea, the practical question is whether a proposed plan has a workable supervision arrangement across the entire course, not whether the first fitting can happen during a holiday.

Separate alignment goals from a complete bite assessment

Orthodontics is not only a question of whether front teeth look straight. NHS information describes treatment for tooth position and how upper and lower teeth meet, supported by examination and sometimes imaging or scans. Ask the clinician which findings are relevant to your own goals and whether the proposed work is limited or more comprehensive. A computer image of a possible appearance should not replace an explanation of the intended treatment.
If your concern involves only a small visible change, ask what a limited plan would address and what it would deliberately leave unchanged. If a broader plan is proposed, request the reason for expanding the scope. Bring information about earlier orthodontics and retainers, particularly if teeth have moved since prior treatment. That history helps frame a discussion about a new course without assuming that repeating the previous method is automatically appropriate.
Explain your aim and your home base
Describe the concern you want assessed: crowding, spaces, bite, a returning change after earlier orthodontics or an appliance already in place. Bring earlier records and retainers if the clinic requests them. Tell the practice where you normally live and how often you can realistically return. Ask whether the consultation is intended to start new care, provide a second opinion or discuss transferring an existing case, because each has different record and appointment needs.
Compare the care model behind braces and aligners
Different appliances do not remove the need for clinical supervision. Ask how a proposed method is selected, which appointments are used to check progress and what findings could lead to a change in the plan. NHS information describes fixed and removable approaches and the role of retention after active treatment. A product count alone does not describe the full course or establish that care can be completed without in-person reviews.
For aligners, ask how lost appliances, fit problems and additional sets are handled. For fixed appliances, clarify the arrangements for adjustments and breakages. In either case, ask who makes decisions when the observed progress differs from the original proposal. An advertised digital plan should be treated as part of a clinical discussion rather than a guaranteed prediction. Do not assume a replacement appliance supplied by another provider is equivalent without that clinician reviewing the case.
Request an understandable treatment brief
Ask the clinician to explain the findings and the goals of the proposed plan before comparing brands. Request discussion of suitable alternatives and anything the plan does not aim to change. If extractions, additional dental work or another specialty are proposed, ask how those decisions relate to the orthodontic plan. Leave with enough information to explain the proposal to your usual dentist without relying on promotional terms such as invisible, fast or premium.
Compare a course, not a box of aligners
Ask whether the quoted fee covers diagnostic records, the appliance, routine supervision, additional aligners or adjustments, removal and retainers. Request a definition of any refinement allowance and its time limits. For treatment charged by arch, confirm whether both arches are planned. Have the practice identify what becomes chargeable after the included period and what happens to the financial arrangement if you relocate or transfer care before the plan is finished.

Test whether the follow-up arrangement is practical
Ask which appointments need physical attendance and who performs checks if you are abroad. Do not assume video messages replace examinations or that another orthodontist will automatically continue a plan they did not design. Confirm any receiving clinician's agreement before starting. Discuss how a broken appliance, lost aligner or interruption in travel would be handled. A schedule should have a named clinical contact and a clear process for unexpected problems as well as routine adjustments.
Examine the transfer problem before beginning abroad
A course may extend across many visits, making attendance a central part of the decision. Ask the Korean practice how it handles patients who cannot return as expected. If the plan depends on another orthodontist at home, obtain that clinician's agreement before the first fitting, including what responsibility they are willing to accept. A referral, shared appliance brand or access to photographs does not automatically create a transfer arrangement.
Request the assessment records and written plan that a receiving clinician would need, along with the financial terms for a transfer. Ask what happens to unused services and whether new assessment fees would be charged elsewhere. Compare this with the alternative of using the current trip for an opinion and beginning active care nearer home. The most convenient first appointment is not necessarily the most practical location for supervising the whole course and its retention stage.
Plan the retention stage from the beginning
Ask what happens after the active treatment stage, how retainers are supplied and how replacement retainers are priced. Request a copy of the final plan, key records and any agreed transfer process. If you decide not to start during this trip, ask which assessment documents can support a later consultation. A considered decision can be to gather information now and begin care where continuing appointments are easier to arrange, rather than forcing a long-term course into a short visit.
