Physiotherapy Assessment in Korea: Goals, Sessions and Handover
A useful physiotherapy visit begins with a clear problem and a measurable daily goal. International visitors should also establish how an assessment connects with medical care and how any programme can continue when a short stay ends.

An assessment should produce a working rehabilitation problem

Physiotherapy concerns movement and function in the context of an injury, illness or other limitation. A productive initial assessment identifies what the person can currently do, which task is restricted and what needs clarification before treatment. The NHS describes examination of areas such as strength and balance alongside symptoms and history.
For a visitor, this can turn a vague goal such as feel better into a practical one, such as managing a particular daily task. An assessment should also acknowledge when the question needs another professional rather than assume that every problem belongs in the same therapy programme.
Active practice and hands-on treatment have different roles
A plan can include exercises, advice and hands-on techniques, sometimes alongside other therapies. These elements should connect to the assessment rather than form a list of devices used during a session. Exercise instruction is valuable only when the person understands the task and can reproduce it in the intended setting.
Hands-on treatment does not remove the need to explain the home component when one is advised. The balance depends on the problem; the number of machines or techniques in an advertisement cannot establish that a programme is more suitable or more complete.
Measure a change that matters to the individual
The record should distinguish an observation made during one session from a goal assessed over time. For example, an improvement in a measured movement is useful information, but the practical question may still be whether an everyday task is easier. A clear programme names what will be reviewed, when and by whom.
If the person is not progressing, continuing identical sessions indefinitely should not be the only option presented. The assessment may need revisiting or the original medical question may remain unresolved. This approach is especially useful when a short stay permits only a small part of a longer programme.
Choose a functional question for the first appointment
Think about what you want to understand rather than how many sessions you want to buy. You might need help with a walking limitation, a return to desk work or carrying out an existing postoperative programme. Bring examples of tasks that are difficult and describe how the problem affects an ordinary day. The NHS describes an initial physiotherapy appointment as including discussion of symptoms and history and assessment of function. Your own goal helps turn that assessment into a plan that can be reviewed.
Supply medical context and restrictions
Bring referral letters, operation reports and any limits already set by your treating clinician. State the date of surgery or injury accurately and distinguish a current restriction from an instruction that applied only immediately afterwards. If you have relevant images or reports, ask whether the receiving provider needs them before the appointment. Mention other medical conditions and medicines that may matter to assessment. A rehabilitation professional should not have to guess what an unfamiliar surgical abbreviation means or whether another clinician has cleared a particular activity.

Compare the service content before package prices
A fee labelled physiotherapy may refer to an initial assessment, a supervised appointment or a narrower treatment session. Establish the session length, professional service, reassessment and written instruction included. Equipment, interpretation or additional physician review may carry separate charges.
If a package includes several visits, identify which are actually available during your stay and whether an unused portion is refundable. A lower per-session figure has little meaning if appointments do not provide the assessment or instruction you need. The total should describe a plausible care plan rather than create one through a prepaid visit count.
Discuss a programme you can actually continue
Ask why each proposed element is included and what change would show that it is helping. Request an exercise demonstration and written instructions suitable for your setting, including equipment you would need after returning home. Discuss how an exercise should be adjusted if it is uncomfortable and when professional reassessment is necessary.
If photographs or videos are suggested, ask permission and avoid capturing other patients. A small number of clearly understood tasks with a review plan may be more usable than a lengthy programme you cannot explain back to the clinician.
Build a bridge between a Korean visit and home practice
Before the first appointment, consider where you will carry out any advised activities: a hotel room, a small apartment or a fully equipped rehabilitation setting are different environments. Give the professional a realistic account so the programme does not rely on unavailable equipment.
When further care will happen at home, the handover should explain starting function, agreed goals and the reason for selected tasks. A demonstration or permitted recording can support understanding without showing other patients. The most useful souvenir of an appointment is an understandable progression and review plan, not a collection of unexplained exercise names.
Compare the full cost and arrange the handover
Request separate prices for assessment and subsequent sessions, with any equipment, additional consultation or translation charges identified. Ask about cancellation and unused sessions before paying for a course. Check insurance requirements for referrals and receipts with your insurer. At the final visit, obtain a summary of the assessment, goals, activities advised and outstanding questions. Identify the professional who will review the programme at home if it needs to continue. A session schedule should support the clinical plan rather than becoming the reason to continue an unsuitable or unclear treatment.
