Bringing a companion to a clinic in Korea: planning the practical details
A companion can help with travel and remembering questions, but their role should be clear before the appointment. Clinics have different arrangements for consultation rooms, procedure areas and waiting spaces. Ask about the specific visit instead of assuming that one clinic’s process applies everywhere.
In this guide
Decide what help you want

Explain whether the person will help with transport, practical communication or keeping track of written information. If you want them present during the consultation, ask the clinic in advance. You can also tell the team if part of the discussion should take place privately.
Check the clinic’s access arrangements
Ask whether a companion can enter the relevant areas and whether space or appointment type affects that arrangement. If the clinic proposes sedation or another service with specific departure instructions, obtain those instructions from the clinical team rather than assuming that any companion arrangement is sufficient.
Keep consent and interpretation separate
A companion who speaks the language is not automatically a medical interpreter or a person authorised to receive every document. Tell the clinic how you want explanations and records handled. If professional interpretation is needed, confirm the arrangement and any fee for the actual appointment date.
Share only the practical information needed
Keep the branch address, local time and agreed meeting point easy to access. Avoid distributing sensitive records more widely than necessary to organise the visit. Browse the catalogue for care categories and locations, then ask the selected clinic about its own companion policy.

Agree on the companion’s role before the appointment
A companion can help with transport, remembering questions and keeping paperwork organised. That does not automatically make them an interpreter or authorise them to receive medical information. Tell the clinic who will attend and what help you would like. Ask whether the companion can join the consultation, where they may wait during a procedure and whether there are circumstances in which staff will speak with you privately.
Keep your own opportunity to ask questions and make decisions. If the companion is helping with language, identify any limitations in medical vocabulary rather than pretending there are none. A professional interpretation arrangement may be more appropriate for part of the discussion. Confirm any appointment requirement in advance so it does not become a surprise at registration.
Check practical requirements separately from general support
If a procedure involves sedation or another arrangement with discharge requirements, ask the treating clinic what it requires from an escort. Do not assume that having somebody in the same city satisfies those instructions. Confirm the collection time, contact route and transport plan once the clinical team has explained the procedure-specific needs. A general companion guide cannot determine when you can travel alone.
Give the companion a copy of the confirmed branch address and an agreed way to contact you without sharing unnecessary documents. If they are expected to assist after the visit, include them in the relevant explanation with your agreement. KoreaClinicGo can help you identify the branch and service to ask about; the treating clinic determines its attendance and discharge arrangements.
