Eyelid surgery in Korea: consultation, risks and follow-up questions

Eyelid surgery can refer to different concerns and procedures. Explain what you hope to discuss and any symptoms, then ask what operation is proposed. A photograph or a procedure name cannot determine a personal plan. Confirm who will assess you and who would perform any operation.

In this guide
  1. Clarify the goal and the procedure
  2. Discuss eye history, risks and follow-up
  3. Compare written quotes and prepare a visit inquiry

Clarify the goal and the procedure

An upper-eyelid crease request and a concern about excess eyelid skin can have different goals. A 2009 journal article discusses methods for creating an eyelid crease; the NHS patient page discusses removal of excess eyelid tissue. These sources do not decide which technique is appropriate for you or establish current Korean clinic services. Ask the clinician to explain the proposed approach and alternatives.

Discuss eye history, risks and follow-up

Tell the clinician about dry eyes, previous eyelid or eye procedures and medicines, including medicines that reduce blood clotting. Do not stop or change a medicine without advice from the clinician who prescribed it. Ask what information is needed for your individual assessment.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) lists possible risks including difficulty closing the eyes, dry eyes, infection, temporary or permanent changes in vision, and a very rare chance of blindness. The NHS describes temporary difficulty closing swollen eyelids and rare but serious problems affecting vision. The NHS and ASPS sources describe blepharoplasty generally and may not reflect every eyelid procedure, including crease-creation procedures. Ask the surgeon which risks apply to the proposed procedure, what symptoms need urgent attention and whom to contact after leaving Korea.

Compare written quotes and prepare a visit inquiry

Ask for an itemised written quotation covering the proposed procedure, anaesthesia, tests and follow-up, and identify charges that remain uncertain. Tell the clinician your travel dates and ask how assessment and follow-up would fit your circumstances. Do not assume a fixed recovery period or guaranteed result.
